Choosing a wedding cake is a serious matter that will have a large impact on the whole feel and success of a wedding. A good wedding cake is something that most people in attendance at a wedding look forward to, while its appearance should also be eye catching and almost as stunning as the bride's dress. Arguably the wedding cake is the main focus of the wedding reception and the cutting of the cake by the bride and groom is a highly important tradition and a very romantic moment. It will also be the focus of many photographs and won't be cheap – so you need to get it right. At the same time it needs to take into account many aspects of the wedding to ensure that it's suitable and fits the tone of the wedding as well as remaining fashionable and not too cliched.

The most basic and common form of wedding cake is the white cake with multiple tiers and the bride and groom standing on top. If you want a wedding that's completely traditional in style – and one that fits the 'schema' most of us have for weddings – then this is the one to go for. However if you want something a little different then this might not be the cake for you.

Even when choosing the conventional cake though there are still things to consider – how big do you want to go, how many tiers, how frilly do you want it, and do you want the icing to have a light pink or blue in it? At the same time the actual inside of the cake – I.e. what you want in it in terms of sponge, jelly etc – can vary completely. The cake has to appeal to every sense.

The size of the cake will largely depend on the number of people in attendance. However if you have money to spend then you might want to make your cake bigger than necessary in order to make it more impressive – having a large cake is part of the fun of a wedding and in order to make your day really perfect why not splash out on one that will trump all others?

Deciding on the style is also a matter of preference. If you have a themed wedding then you might want to go for a themed cake in order to fit – or you might have a colour for your wedding that you want to use. If you are going for the conventional design then you should still look through several examples of cakes that use that design to choose the one that you both look most. Most wedding cake services will have a website or a portfolio that you can flick through to see what different cakes are on offer.

Finally for the flavour you will want a cake that appeals to all the senses. At the same time you will want your cake to appeal to as many people as possible to avoid lots being left over at the end.

Brides are famous for being hard to please, but I recently went to a wedding which had a profiterole tower from this wedding cakes Melbourne bakery. They are also famous for their birthday cakes.
